A Quest for Glory: Major General Robert Howe and the American Revolution, by Charles E. Bennett, Donald R. Lennon

Born into a wealthy and prominent Cape Fear River plantation family, Howe became a militia officer, justice of the peace, and legislator. In 1775 he was appointed colonel of the Second North Carolina Regiment and became commanding general of the Southern Department and the highest ranking officer in the states south of Virginia. He also served as a division commander with General Washington's main army in the New York Highlands, commanded the crucial West Point post, and put down mutinies in the American army.

From Library Journal
Howe (1732-86) was North Carolina's only major general in the Revolution and the highest-ranking officer from the states south of Virginia. He participated in the French and Indian War, led royal troops against the Regulators in 1768, served in his provincial congress, won laurels at Norfolk in 1776, commanded the Southern Department, headed the fort at West Point, and ran a "network of spies" that helped thwart the treason of Benedict Arnold. Why then is he not better known? He left few papers and died before writing memoirs, but above all he "lost" Georgia to the British in 1778. The authors argue strongly that he did all he could, but they are handicapped by a lack of documentation. Nevertheless, this judicious military history restores the contributions of an important Revolutionary figure. For specialists.

Remarkable Look at a Forgotten Founding Father
By Kevin M. Derby
Robert Howe was the highest ranking Revolutionary War general from the states south of Virginia yet he remains one of the most forgotten of the Founding Fathers. Howe was an important commander. He led the Department of the South until late 1778 and American history would have been quite different had he proven successful in taking Florida or defending Savannah during his tenure in command.

Congressman Charles Bennett and Prof. Donald Lennon rescued Howe from the dustbin of history in this splendid little biography. While focusing on Howe's role in the American Revolution, the authors also focus on Howe's odd career on the stage of North Carolina politics of the 1760s and 1770s. They also bring the man to life to some extent-capturing his rather shoddy personal life (Howe was a womanizer and was one of the few elites from that era who had been divorced); his reckless personal spending; his sly sense of humor; his love of Shakespeare; his bad handwriting; his love of eating fish; and his pompous demeanor. Bennett and Lennon also offer an excellent narrative of Howe's repeated invasions of Florida and the failed defense of Savannah. They also offer great insight into Howe's role commanding defensive positions in New York and in putting down two mutinies in the later stages of the war in New Jersey. Howe died of a fever shortly after the war ended and never earned the recognition that he craved.

Strangely enough for a man with Howe's political background, his chief weakness as a commander was his terrible relations with the political leaders of South Carolina and Georgia (he even ended up in a duel with Christopher Gadsden). Howe was a regular officer and never was given control of the militia as he so badly desired in his invasion of Florida and his defense of Savannah. Despite this, Howe had a number of important patrons including George Washington and Henry Laurens. Bennett and Lennon offer an interesting look at this neglected general and do so in a readable, though short, biography. Best of all, they use primary sources to offer an unforgettable portrait of a rather forgettable general. While not exactly a good general, Robert Howe comes off as-dare we use such a word for a Founding Father-fun.

Knowing the unknown
By Roy Messineo
As a history buff, particularly of the Revolutionary War, this book provided real insifht into one of the lesser know particpants on the American side. The 1779 Iroquois War was a real eye opener.

A walk in the past
By Jim L. Toungate
I love history and this book was a look at the past and gives you a view of how some duels ended between men that didn't want it to happen in the first place.
