Interesting but at the same time arrogant

I am a political junkie who decided to read this book to learn the core elements that led to President Obama's successful 2008 campaign. In the interest of full disclosure, I am a conservative Republican who votes for John McCain.

The Audacity to WIn delivered in one respect. David Plouffe provided a detailed overview of the strategy and how it was executed.

His identification of the power of digital/and social media was a key to Obama's success. They harnessed the power of the Internet to develop a personal rapport with more than 13 million people who registered on Obama's Web site.

Several things turned me off about the book. Plouffe at times comes across as arrogant and immature. He devotes material sections of copy to demean opponents and the strategies they pursued.

I found myself wishing he would stand above the fray and be more magnanimous.

Overall, I would strongly recommend the audacity to win to any person, regardless of political persuasion, who has a definite interest in what it takes to win a presidential election.

A FASCINATING OPERATING MANUAL - How To Win The Presidency - 5 STARS !!!

I am probably north of 100 books about the Presidency. David Plouffe's "The Audacity to Win" is right up there as a masterpiece for understanding the nuts and bolts, or mechanics if you will about how to launch a campaign for the nomination, and then the Presidency of the United States. No one and I believe I have read most of them, has put together a better battlefield plan than this MASTER STRATEGIST, who came out of nowhere to launch the perfect campaign.

You know you are reading something very special when it occurs to you as you read it, that if you had a week to think about it, you could not have expressed it better yourself. Plouffe reveals himself in this book to be the best campaign manager of his generation hands down, and no one is else is even close. Just his choice of words when he expresses himself is spot on brilliant.

There are 17 chapters in this book spread among 375 pages. The writing is engrossing, fascinating, seat of the pants action. Although the book is written for the general population it is the political junkie that will love and cherish it. Plouffe is very clear that he is dealing with a young, inexperienced Barack Obama and attempting to derail a massive train called Hillary Clinton who has face value, all the money in the world, connections, power and knowing how to use power, and Plouffe wants to knock her out for the nomination. He will then, if successful, have to go against the Republican war machine.

As Plouffe points out, Republicans fall in line, Democrats fall in love. His sidekick for the journey will be David Axelrod of Chicago, who is Obama's friend and advisor for more than a decade. With Plouffe leading the charge, they would run a basically flawless campaign. There was no room for error because Hillary was already so far in front, and acknowledged as the preordained sure winner. Why even enter the race, but Obama was determined, and you don't enter a race when you want to. You enter when you think you can win it. The future President was determined that he could make a difference and now was the time. It is also pointed out that Obama knew that he would not be crushed if he lost. He was comfortable in his own skin. He could stomach defeat because his whole ego was not at risk in this race. He would be okay emotionally, losing.

Every chapter is fascinating. Every page contains vital information about how to run a campaign at the highest levels of government. How did Obama run a flawless campaign with basically no unforced errors? It's one thing when something comes out of left field that attempts to defeat you. It's another thing to create your own problems by verbal miscues or having others say the wrong thing on your behalf.

There were no leaks in this campaign. There were no members of the campaign staff that were trying to kill off other members of the staff to elevate themselves. Nobody was paid a lavish salary, and the whole deal was treated like a democracy. Everybody seemed to be comfortable with others on the staff. You did not see the numerous staff reshufflings that you see in other campaigns. The big time firings weren't there. The vetting process worked.

Plouffe takes you through the campaign step by step. He shows you how to organize, what was unique about this campaign. These guys were revolutionary in what they did. Their involvement with the Internet was mind boggling. Obama's people probably had more success with the Internet than the rest of the candidates in both political parties combined. Think about it, Obama was financially completely competitive with Hillary Clinton, and later on would manage to our draw and out spend her, because of his financial success on the Internet. No one could have predicted this.

Every time the Obama campaign took a risk, whether it was going to Europe to showcase Obama to 200,000 people in Germany, or have him make a major statement on race in Philadelphia after his minister made politically heated remarks, Obama benefited from taking the risk. America has never seen a campaign or campaigner like this before. We are fortunate to have this book written by the ultimate insider, and it will allow the rest of us to figure out how they pulled it off. We should all read it regardless of our political persuasion, and thank you for reading this review.

This is Actually a Must Read for Business not Politics

A lot of similar ground has been covered as recently as the publishing of the book "Battle of America 2008". The difference between Haynes Johnson and this book is that it has more of an inside story - fun, intimacy and sad personal moments for the players who arguably ran the most successful presidential campaign ever considering the results and the odds when it started.

It is a very easy read and you can curl up and read it very quickly

The book's real value though is what it takes to have the Audacity to Win in life or business. First of all many times in business or life the odd's are not in your favor. To overcome the odds you have to have a game plan and stick to it every day.

It also requires in business, individuals to agree to lose their life-style balance. Everyone wants to win and make money but are they prepared to pay the price? The latter is the inflection point in starting up businesses or turning them around. If you ask someone would they like to be a millionare the answer is almost always yes. Are you prepared to work 7 days a week and 18 hours per day to get it? Very few people say yes.

The book has an intimate side to it - like the author losing his dog over the phone while his wife puts him to "sleep" at the vet. I am not a dog lover but I can tell you as someone who has paid the "price" of not being home for my family during tough time there are many times I can relate.

Audacity to Win could also be called "Will you stick with the company if we are successful".

My only reason for knocking this book down to 4 stars is that I just don't like to see people write tell all books - this one is in no way always flattering to the author - so I give him that credit - but everone knows that he was a key player in winning an historic election - there will be plenty of multi-million dollar fees to run political contests in the future - why write a book about it just to make even more money? In that way it comes off to me as a sales brochure.

[Young] offer[s] up original insights...Young, whose Presence in the Flesh is a broad look at the entire medical profession (with special attention to the pelvic exam), began her research by spending three years trailing a gynecologist, a surgeon, a pathologist, and two internists at an unnamed university hospital. Wearing a tape recorder, she followed these doctors and their patients from the waiting room to the exam room and occasionally to the basement morgue. She noted, along the way, how the medical establishment urged people to disassociate themselves from their bodies so that 'doctoring' could take place...Of course, the most obvious forms of body banter are the 'kidney in Room 311' or 'heart in Room 312' that St. Elsewhere and ER have made famous. But Young goes beyond that, exploring the ways in which patients are complicit in this disembodiment. (Village Voice)

John Graham is the President of the Giraffe Project, an international nonprofit that promotes leadership and encourages people to "stick their necks out" for the common good. An outdoor enthusiast who hitchhiked around the world at twenty-two, he has extensive experience in hiking and climbing, including the first direct ascent of the north wall of Mt. McKinley-a climb so dangerous it's never been repeated. Following a diplomatic career during which he saw service in the revolution in Libya and the war in Vietnam, and at the United Nations, he joined the Giraffe Project in 1983. He lives on Whidbey Island in Washington State.

Brilliant for Business and Outdoors

No wasted words or soapbox sermons here. I've been leading and following for years and found the concepts in this book to be direct and effective, and, if applied, sure to make a difference in all areas of your life--professionally and personally. Some of the concepts are so simple you will wonder why you haven't already been utilizing them. A quick read and a good value.

Leadership for life - not just outdoor activities!

I bought this book because I am a Girl Scout leader and I thought it would help me to safely and effectively lead my troop on outdoor adventures. It has -- but the lessons it teaches are much broader. I have applied what I have learned to situations at work and in making decisions in caring for an elderly parent. I know I will keep this book and will be referring to it frequently. Great for beginners, but even seasoned or natural-born leaders, I believe, can learn something to improve their skills and be more effective.

Great resource for building a Business Analysis Capability

I wish this book was around when I was managing a team of consulting BAs! Barbara covers the full range of topics that are relevant to a BA manager - from hiring, to evaluating, delivering, growing, managing, and turning a group of individual Business Analysts into a service offering that can strategically and tactically support their customers in realizing value. There are sections that will be of interest to recruiters, performance/line managers, and BAs alike.

The content aligns closely with the IIBA's Business Analysis Body of Knowledge, without rehashing it. Also, like any other resource on Business Analysis worth its salt, there is a firm focus on the BA's role to support delivering the strategic goals of the business through project work, and starting with the big picture. Here, this discussion includes both the types of analysis activities as well as skills for building an effective team (often broken into hard and soft skills). I enjoyed the stories from Barbara's experiences, and they help to illustrate the points in the book. I think most BAs will relate to them and have some (nervous) laughter. I'll look forward to some revised diagrams in the future, but the content is comprehensive.

From the perspective of a BA manager, I found the section on managing business analysis services to be extremely useful. The goal I worked to in my role was a holistic and connected view of BA skills that could start with interview questions at the point of hiring, continue through skills maps and training/career plans, and ultimately help match resources and engagement models to client needs. Barbara lays out an approach for doing this quite well, describing a process perspective that is straightforward and hard to find elsewhere. For the reader embarking on the journey to create a BA service, I would suggest leveraging an additional resource to fill in details for a full range of competencies, such as the IIBA's BA Competency Model. This model from the IIBA falls short of implementation and delivery approaches, and Managing Business Analysis Services does a great job of bringing the concepts together into a connected management approach.

This book will continue to serve me as a reference text and launching point for discussions at the BA interest group meetings. I'd recommend it to anyone hiring or managing Business Analysts, as well as any BA looking for ideas to improve the quality and satisfaction they get out of their BA teams.

BA simplified for layman to techies

As a Talent Acquisition Specialist I talk to lots of BA & PM and other technical people and sometime select and recommend BA's by gut feel.. but if i wanted to Define & put the gut feel on paper, its not easy and sometime i am at loss of words.. but it cant be put in better words than what the author (BARBARA) has done.
So if you are a Business Manager/Technology Manager, recruiter or a BA or PM yourself or even a technology director trying to set up a BA practice or any one who want to understand the BA as a process or as a system then this book is for you. I recently got the chance to pick this book and read it. The best part of the book is the language, it is simple & fluid and can be easily understood by everyone and derives heavily from real life scenarios faced in the business world.. i will recommend this book to all the aspiring BA's too..

Suggestion to the publisher - get a electronic version out quickly.. it will surely be a big hit.

By tying everything back to top-line and bottom-line impacts this book provides incredible clarity in a very chaotic but critical area of application development.
