I've owned a few instructional R books. This one is good. This books takes the approach of teaching by example rather than by lengthy descriptions and explanations. For instance, after you briefly read about what "tapply" does and then try the example provided in the book you will most likely understand how to use "tapply" if you don't already know. Or you can read some lengthy description of "tapply" on the web and not really understand what its saying. Lots of biomedical examples and a good sampling of advanced approaches make this book a worthwhile purchase.
Why 4 stars? Data sets mentioned throughout the book are no longer available at the book's companion website. There is a data set folder but some of the data sets are not in there. This has been somewhat frustrating.

There are better books out there

Poorly conceived book. The page count is misleading, with normal formatting the page count would easily be ¼ of what is listed on amazon. It would be a challenge to just provide a brief introduction to the R program given that page limitation. Yet in the space available, the author tries to cover everything from a general introduction to survival analysis, fMRI data and machine learning using R. The result is that there are essentially 5 pages given to each of these fairly complex topic - not enough to be useful in any meaningful way. A good introduction to R (the R book, R in action etc) and an area specific book or google search will serve you much better than purchasing a single book like this.

Dark and Lyrical

I have to say that I do love Mr Shepherd’s writing – it has a dark, atmospheric brooding quality to it that I have not found elsewhere and it never fails to leave me affected, usually jumping at shadows for a while. This, like his previous novels, is part of an ongoing mythology involving Constable Charles Horton, but all are standalone novels in their own right so you can pick up any of them and have a terrific reading experience.

In this story, our hero is drawn into a world of suspected magic and mayhem, as he investigates a house in the country where rumours of witchcraft abound – whilst back in London, a series of baffling murders is taking place. The answers may well lie within an insane asylum where Horton’s wife currently resides, battling her inner demons.

This is an excellent multi stranded story – definitely my favourite so far – it is creepy, unsettling and often horrifying whilst at the same time being strangely fascinating. I was enthralled by the thread of the tale that dealt with the treatment of mental illness, especially as the author has pulled off a difficult feat here by managing to mix the scientific with the mysterious yet still making it all seem perfectly possible. Very intriguing indeed.

I love the characters, was very fond of Abigail Horton especially and the story ebbs and flows between practical and magic with a deft hand that will have you changing your mind page by page as to what exactly is going on. The continued story of Charles Horton, his wife, Abigail, and his semi-enemy, Mr. Graham. Abigail is in dire straits thus fleeing to a madhouse where she sees some very disturbing things. Charles is sent, by Mr. Graham, to Thorpe to determine if witchcraft is being used on his wife and his daughter who are living with a cousin (in sin). Mr. Graham is investigating some horrid murders of Gentlemen. All of these people and the places and things they are seeing are all intertwined. The picture of Wapping, Lower Gun Alley, London, and the village of Thorpe in the early 1800's are all painted clearly as is the lot of women who are without the safety of either a husband or a father.

Unique insights

Not everyone knows that Foucault analyzed religion with his philosophical mind and kept a regular correspondence with a Jesuit scholar and priest. These are fascinating insights and good to know when writing papers and essays on religion.

A mixed bag

As the English speaking world is lacking the definitive collection of Foucault's numerous occasional writings for journals, newspapers and forwards to books, any addition to the ever-expanding oeuvre of translations is a plus.
Most of the selections here have been published previously in other collections. However, this collection includes some interesting pieces that were previously hard to find. My favorite may be "Who are you, Professor Foucault?" an interview conducted shortly after Les Mots and les choses, in which Foucault dismisses the criticism of anti-humanism by referring to humans as mere functioning species. Classic. Also, the essay, "Is It Useless to Revolt?" is a stunning and conflicting piece of political writing. Beautifully written (and translated). The editor includes a selection of Foucault's final lectures which outlines the intended fourth volume to the History of Sexuality: The Confessions of the Flesh.
In all, these essays provide an interesting contrast between Foucault's aesthetic views and views on spirituality and religion. Indeed, the mystical side of Foucault are highlighted in his essays on Klossowski and modern French fiction when read alongside his writings on the Church and mystical experiences.
Oh, and this collection includes a marvellous brief memoir by James Bernauer. Good stuff...

Stop Egging the Eggman!

The four-part Genesis arc continues. The awesome storyline is complemented by some more art by Spaz and picks up where the last issue left off. After Dr. Eggman escaped from his first battle, Sonic, Sally, Boomer and Antoine continue on an instinctive quest to rid the world of him once and for all. Of course, they are still unaware that their planet has been warped into a new version of Mobius.

Their journey continues through an ancient ruin that takes Sonic and his friends underwater. Then, the journey continues through a futuristic city. This is the first issue in the arc to have serious drama. A Freedom Fighter falls to their doom and we begin to worry for them. It would seem the Genesis arc is not just fun and games because the characters are getting deeper to the heart of Eggman's plan.

Quite strangely, all the characters keep recalling memories from the previous version of Mobius that we left behind in issue 225. This is the issue where Sonic first realizes he's jealous for Sally but can't explain why. It only makes the mystery more intense from their point of view.

But although we are enjoying the Genesis arc, it does not give us a lot of answers. Since we are eagerly awaiting the conclusion of the cliffhanger of issue 225, we'd like some insight while reading the Genesis arc. But unfortunately, this issue doesn't tell us much more than we already know. But the crush between Sonic and Sally becomes more apparent and hopefully that will be expanded upon before this arc is concluded.

I don't have much to say in this review that I haven't already said in the review of issue 226. But this is still a good story line that is going to be remembered for a very long time.
