About the Author

Thomas F. Goldman, JD, is Professor Emeritus of Bucks County Community College, where he was a professor of Law and Management and Director of the Center for Legal Studies and the Paralegal Studies Program. He was a member of the Paralegal Studies Advisory Board and mentor at Thomas Edison State College, where he developed an Advanced Litigation Support and Technology Certificate Program in the School of Professional Studies, and implemented the online paralegal studies program for the New York Times knowledge network.

 

He is an author of textbooks in paralegal studies and technology, including Technology in the Law Office, Accounting and Taxation for Paralegals, Civil Litigation: Process and Procedures, Litigation Practice: E-Discovery and Technology, Abacus Law: A Hands-On Tutorial and Guide, Real Estate Fundamentals, and SmartDraw Tutorial and Guide.

 

An accounting and economics graduate of Boston University and a graduate of Temple University School of Law, Professor Goldman has an active international law, technology law, and litigation practice. He has worked extensively with paralegals and received the award of the Legal Support Staff Guild. He was elected the Legal Secretaries Association Boss of the Year for his contribution to cooperative education of encouraging the use of paralegals and legal assistants in law offices. He also received the Bucks County Community College Alumni Association Professional Achievement Award. He has been an educational consultant on technology to educational institutions and major corporations and is a frequent speaker and lecturer on educational, legal, and technology issues.

 

Henry R. Cheeseman is Professor Emeritus of the Marshall School of Business of the University of Southern California (USC), Los Angeles, California, where he was a professor of business law and Director of the Legal Studies in Business Program. Professor Cheeseman taught business law, legal environment, corporate law, securities regulation, cyberlaw, and ethics courses in both the Master of Business Administration (MBA) and undergraduate programs of the Marshall School of Business of the University of Southern California. He received the Golden Apple Teaching Award on many occasions by being voted by the students as the best professor at the Marshall School of Business. He has also served at the Center for Excellence in teaching at the university.

 

Professor Cheeseman has earned six degrees, including a bachelor’s degree in finance from Marquette University, both a master’s in business administration (MBA) and a master’s in business taxation (MBT) from the University of Southern California, a juris doctor (JD) degree from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Law, a master’s degree with an emphasis on law and economics from the University of Chicago, and a master’s in law (LLM) degree in financial institutions law from Boston University.

 

Professor Cheeseman is an award-winning author of several business law textbooks published by Pearson Education, including the definitive and highly regarded Business Law. Other business law and legal environment textbooks authored by Professor Cheeseman and published by Pearson Education include Contemporary Business Law, Legal Environment of Business, and Introduction to Law. In addition to being a coauthor with Professor Thomas Goldman of the fifth editions of The Paralegal Professional and The Paralegal Professional The Essentials, he is also coauthor of Contract Law for Paralegals and Business Organizations for Paralegals, all published by Pearson Education.

Story based on a misnomer

The Little Drummer Girl has one glaring deficiency: the basis upon which the story rests is false.

The novel's antagonist, named Khalil, is a 'Palestinian' freedom fighter who doesn't want the 'Palestinian People' to wait 2,000 years, like the Jews waited, for the restoration of their 'homeland'. Khalil runs a highly effective terrorist network that bombs Israeli targets throughout Europe in order to advertise the 'Palestinian' cause.

John le Carré bases his story on the false historical claim that there is such an ethnic group called the 'Palestinians'. The only 'Palestinians' to have existed were citizens of the 1922 League of Nations' 'Mandate for Palestine', the Jewish Homeland. The term 'Palestinian' was only used for legal purposes to describe those living in the Jewish Homeland between 1922-1948. As such, Jews were also defined as 'Palestinians'. When Israel became a state in 1948 (changing its name from Palestine to Israel. The name Palestine was given to the territory in 135 AD by Emperor Hadrian as an insult to the Jews, who had just revolted against Roman rule for a second time. Palestine is the Romanized version of the name Philistine, the land of Israel's ancient enemies), the term 'Palestinian' became defunct, but was then co-opted by Arab governments and used to fool ignorant observers that the 'Palestinians' had lost their land to the Jews. John le Carré presents the 'Palestinians' as an actual ethnic group with justified land claims against the Jewish state, when in fact there never was a 'Palestinian' ethnic group present in the Middle East. And here's the proof of the Arab governments' lie: Unless those who take the anti-Israeli side in this discussion can produce what should be the easy to find documents from the early 1920s where the 'Palestinian People' are demanding their state and being denied their demands by the League of Nations, then you have just proved to yourselves that the 'distinct Palestinian People' canard is just that-a canard.

The Little Drummer Girl does have one saving grace, however, and that revolves around the Mossad recruitment of 'Charlie', an unknown actress with Vanessa Redgrave-like politics. Due to the latest bombing by Khalil of an Israeli target in Bad Godesberg, the Mossad must quickly neutralize Khalil and his network or else the politicians in Israel and the IDF will take matters into their own hands, which means indiscriminate reprisal attacks on Arab (not 'Palestinian') refugee camps, resulting in the deaths of women and children and another black eye for Israel in the court of world opinion.

On the trail of the elusive Khalil is the Mossad's best operative-Kurtz, and his Mossad team. Kurtz's plan: use Charlie to infiltrate Khalil's network and hope to luck that once inside Khalil can be found.

The MIssing Little Drummer Girl

I read the book before I saw the movie, which usually makes the movie seem less interesting, but that was not the case. Seeing Diane Keaton at the training camp was more vivid than I could imagine when reading. This is an important book, neither for nor against the Palestinians or the Israelis. It is just telling a part of the story. This young woman is indicative of the lengths that each will go to try to stop the other. I believe convincing a Palestinian supporter to help the Israelis is one of the most important parts of the book. The Israeli spy shows her a bit of truth, and informs the reader of the continued use of terror. The Israelis are trying to stop him, not kill hundreds of Palestinians. That is the message but the delivery is worth more than the message.
I don't understand why this movie is so hard to find. NetFlix and BlockBuster did not list it when I searched which is why I finally bought it, and even that took some doing.
This item was in the condition promised by the seller.

Visually & Emotionally Stimulating Historical M/M Read

Since I became obsessed with the TV show Spartacus I've been on the lookout for books featuring gladiators/Roman life and immediately became drawn to He Is Worthy. There's a lot happening in the shortened length of this book and I became thoroughly immersed in this world and the outcome of its appealing characters.
Novius Senna has grown tired of doing dirty deeds at Nero's request and has luckily stumbled across the one man who can help him end Nero's nightmarish deeds. Aenor's life took a brutal turn the day he went from trader to slave and after being brutalized by Romans for entertainment is hesitant to trust Senna and the feelings being generated. Aenor's desire for revenge and a gentle hand have him agreeing to a plan that will result in both of their deaths but will end Nero's tyranny.
Knowing their lives are quickly coming to an end has them clinging to each other quickly. Senna was gentle with Aenor during their sexual encounters and it was sad knowing that almost every previous encounter for him was abusive. Seeing this other side of Senna, being caring instead of killer, was appealing and showed why they needed to be together. Senna liked himself with Aenor as Aenor drew strength from Senna after being emotionally defeated for so long.
There were many names being bandied about which made it hard to keep track of who was who at times. Some of the political/war talk became a bit distracting at times as well but the images and language of that time felt very realistic. It was easy to picture what was happening and helped me immerse myself in the story. The conclusion of the story was a bit rushed and after the big build-up of the assassination plan there was a bit of a let down.

All in all though I found much to like about this emotionally engaging m/m read. The main characters were sympathetic and immensely likable along with the visually descriptive historical scenes which kept me turning the pages with great anticipation. Lisa Henry's writing is new to me and judging by my enjoyment of this story I look forward to reading more of her works.

3 1/2 Dark and gruesome historical fiction

These Warriors of Rome books published by Riptide are not for the faint of heart. The first in the series is "The Left Hand of Calvus" and though it was brutal it wasn't sexually explicit so I was a little taken by surprise at the sexual torment that takes place in this one. If you haven't read the first book and are interested in this one, no worries, these two are only connected by the ancient Rome setting.

I need to say something before I begin here because I know this sort of thing is a trigger for some readers and many prefer to avoid it. He Is Worthy contains descriptive scenes of sexual torture and the multiple rape and humiliation of an innocent young man. There are several scenes that will make you shudder with revulsion. It's not an easy read and there really aren't any moments of levity to make it any less grueling.

He Is Worthy is set in ancient Rome where an emperor named Nero , insane with power, terrorizes his people for pleasure. Oblivious to the pain and terror of the innocents he harms, his reign of terror gets more brutal with each passing day. Senna grew up with Nero and is in a very precarious position. He realizes his childhood friend has gone off the deep end and he is increasingly disturbed by Nero's actions but standing up to him means instant death. And he should know. It is Senna's job to visit those the emperor believes have betrayed him. When Senna utters the words "you no longer have the friendship of the Emperor" they fall upon their own sword. Senna is the messenger of death and feared by most men in Rome. He once believed in the cause but he's seen innocent men die and has realized Nero is mad But Senna can no longer sit back and do nothing and comes up with a plan to murder his old friend but he needs to find a slave willing to help him.

Aenor is a young man accused of a murder he did not commit and turned into a "pleasure slave" for the emperor. Aenor has been used and abused but has not lost his fighting spirit. When Senna sees him for the first time naked, bound and beaten but not defeated he is attracted both to his strength and his beauty and sets his sights on using him to bring his plan to fruition. Senna's feelings are mixed and slightly disturbing to me as a reader. "Senna shifted, adjusting the fall of his toga to cover an erection that sickened him."

Senna is not perfect and is obviously tarnished by the brutalities he's witnessed but he is kind to Aenor, even if his motives may not be pure. Aenor responds to the kindness despite his battered state. Hate for the emperor binds them as they work together to bring him down. Amidst all of the horror, they find some moments of solace. This isn't a sweet and fluffy love story. The relationship between Senna and Aenor is built on lust, gratitude and desperation but I understood it and enjoyed watching them grow to trust one another.

But don't get me wrong, this isn't a really any kind of romance. I'd classify it as dark historical fiction with some decently drawn main characters. There was a lot of setup, a lot of character introductions and a lot of history that was tossed around early on. I'm not a history buff and admit to being a wee bit confused and rereading the first few chapters to get mostly everything straight. But once things got going it was easy enough to fall into the story. It's fast paced and filled with pain and in the end Senna turns out to be a loyal man trying to do the right thing in a horrible situation. Senna and Aenor find some peace amidst all the debauchery and loss and it's a beautiful thing but if you're looking for a heart stopping, forever kind of romance, well, you might want to look somewhere else.

He is Worthy, Lisa Henry's novel in the Warriors of Rome series is gripping and edgy. Set in 68 A.D. Rome, the tale illustrates life under one of Rome's most feared and disturbing men, Nero. Senna, Nero's friend and henchman lives a dangerous life as the deliverer of Nero's madness. Aenor is a newly captive Bructeri, enslaved by Nero for his demented pleasure.

Turmoil surrounds the time period as Nero grows more insane, brutalizing his friends and enemies alike. Torturing slaves; raping and pillaging are among his depravities. Senna realizes that all is lost under the realm of Nero and soon takes matters into his own hands as to eradicate Nero from Rome. He encounters Aenor in Nero's palace and immediately is drawn to the tortured slave. Battered and horrifically beaten, Senna sees past the physical and into the soul of a beautiful creature who contains strength and passion burning in his eyes. Aenor, although hating all things Roman, agrees to help Senna destroy Nero. Deceit and disloyalty lead to treason and sends the two men on a downhill spiral where the only ending can be tragedy. A commonality develops between the two men as a hatred for Nero and affection for each other blossoms in a world where the delineation between master and slave is never crossed unless taken by force.

Ms. Henry delivers a tale that kept me on the edge of my seat as I could not put the book down. I became enraged, cried and cheered for the underdog in this enthralling story. The demeanor of Senna and Aenor captivated my mind and led me on a journey of the human spirit not found in contemporary writing. The sex between the two men is not one of erotic lust, but a careful exploration between two desperate souls finding their way in a tumultuous time. The descriptions are true to the brutality of what Rome was as well as the splendor of what it was to become. A novel worthy of any fan of Roman history.

A little different and unique approach to achieving physical fitness.

I have been a fitness fanatic most of my life and I have participated in just about every type of exercise program. I have also read and wrote reviews on numerous physical fitness books over the years. I was fortunate and picked up this volume (The High Intensity Fitness Revolution for Men by Pete Cerqua) recently for a bargain price. I am familiar with the many fitness routines being practiced today, but I had not heard of this type of routine up until I read this book.

I found the approach in this book to be quite different than most of the other fitness programs I have practiced over the years. This book is organized into nine chapters. The first chapter covers the top 10 reasons why short workouts are better. The second chapter provides information on getting you started in the program. The third chapter explains a few tests you need to do to determine your baseline. Chapter four covers high intensity home workouts. Chapter five shows high intensity exercises for the legs. Chapter six deals with high intensity pushing exercises. Chapter seven explains high intensity pulling exercises. Chapter eight emphasizes the importance of rest and the final chapter covers high intensity nutrition.

This text is loaded with clear color photographs explaining each exercise and how to perform them. This specific routine is unlike other fitness programs. It is more a combination of half and full contractions in the exercises which works your muscles harder with fewer reps. If you are seeking an exercise program which is short but effective, you should check out this book. I found the exercises really work the muscles when done exactly as the book teaches you.

Editor Sorely Needed

I read an article in the New York Times about new research that showed effectiveness of short, high intensity workouts. It got me interested, so I went to Amazon to see if I could find a book would have this kind of exercise program. I first saw "The 90-Second Fitness Solution", but it seemed like it was more geared toward women. Then, I saw "High Intensity Fitness Revolution for Men: A Fast and Easy Workout with Amazing Results" and decided to get it.

I've read this book several times and I do have two problems with book itself. The first problem is the writing. This book was so terribly edited that I thought it was self-published. For example:
In order to get your baseline for a home workout he says to "Put your arms straight out in front of you for balance and do a deep knee bend or squat." The accompanying picture, though, shows the the arms on the wall (a wall sit). Does he want me to do a squat or a wall sit?
For the home level workout one, there are three exercises to do. In the description section for the single leg wall sit, he writes, "Do the exercises in the order listed with as little rest as possible." Does he want me to rest as little as possible between the sets or does he me resting between the three exercises (Single Leg Wall Sit, Alternate Leg Raise Plank, and Alternate Arm Raise X-Plank)?

The second problem I had was the layout of the book. There are three workout programs he has for people who go to the gym that work on different parts of the body- "legs", "push" and "pull". He first writes, in chapter 5, about the legs workout one, week one, then legs workout two, week two and finally legs workout three, week three. Next, in chapter 6, he writes about push workout one, week one... and so on and so forth. I don't understand if he wants me to work on each part of the body all week for one week ( bit strange) or to work on a different body part each day (more understandable). If he wants me do the latter, why didn't he organize the workouts by week, e.g., Week One, Day One: Legs... Week One, Day Two: Push.... Week One, Day three: Pull?
Then there is all the white space in the book...

I decided to give it three stars because I just got this book the other day and so I'm not sure how effective the exercises are. They seem good. I plan to update this review in a couple of months or so to comment on the effectiveness of the workout program.

By the way, as of this writing, there are only two reviews of this book. One reviewer has only written one review- a glowing review of this book and the other has written four reviews, three of them on the same day (the other was written a day later) and two of them are for book written by this author.

I've decided to lower the rating from three to one. In the past two months, I've lost over 15 pounds, but not by help from this book. I tried reading it, but it was too disorganized. I found even more problems with this book. If it were a physical book instead of an ebook, I'd throw it away. Save your money and find another book.

Poorly written and organised, and lacking clarity.

Although it might be the result of a good deal of knowledge and expertise, this book appears to have been written in a hurry, and without the benefit of a competent editor or designer. As much as the author claims to save you time exercising, you may find yourself wasting time in re-reading this book over and over again to try to pick out the parts most applicable to yourself, and then structuring the information in an organised and easy-to-follow way; a need the author has failed to accommodate.

To add insult to injury, the author insults the reader's intelligence with a hokey little populist tract on "What is a real man?" (featuring such gems of BS as "a guy's guy"), as if we should care about his opinion on this, which is irrelevant to the subject of the book.

However, having tried the 90-second exercises in Cerqua's previous book, I suspect the principles are well worth trying, so I plan to make the best sense I can out of this book.

About the Author

Michael Sullivan, Emeritus Professor of Mathematics at Chicago State University, received a Ph.D. in mathematics from the Illinois Institute of Technology. Mike taught at Chicago State for 35 years before recently retiring. He is a native of Chicago’s South Side and divides his time between a home in Oak Lawn IL and a condo in Naples FL.

 

Mike is a member of the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America. He is a past president of the Text and Academic Authors Association and is currently Treasurer of its Foundation. He is a member of the TAA Council of Fellows and was awarded the TAA Mike Keedy award in 1997 and the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. In addition, he represents TAA on the Authors Coalition of America.

 

Mike has been writing textbooks for more than 35 years and currently has 15 books in print, twelve with Pearson Education. When not writing, he enjoys tennis, golf, gardening, and travel.

 

Mike has four children: Kathleen teaches college mathematics; Michael III teaches college mathematics and is his coauthor on two precalculus series; Dan works in publishing; and Colleen teaches middle-school and secondary school mathematics. Twelve grandchildren round out the family.

1)Michael Sullivan (Sr.) is one of the four or five best writers
of math textbooks on today's scene. If you can find a textbook written by him that fits whatever current math course you are in
buy the book sight unseen. You will be more than happy that you
did.
2)As far as this book is concerned, I used it from chapter 1 to the end (every section of every chapter) and did every problem in
the book. I did not have an instructor and I was not enrolled in a course. I used the book to brush up for calculus after being out of school for 20 years.
3)This book is great for a course in college algebra, trigonometry, or precalculus. It serves all three purposes. I know this because after I finished the text and began studying
calculus, on my own, I was really able to appreciate how well
Sullivan's book prepared me for calculus.
4)The explanations of each concept are clear, not more rigorous
than is appropriate for a student at the level of the textbook,
but certainly not dumbed down.
5)The problems and questions are well written, comprehensive, and
most importantly, instructive. I found that the best question I
could ask myself about every problem in the book was "now what is
Sullivan trying to get me to see by doing this problem or answering this question". I mention this because this is what Sullivan is really good at; he doesn't spoon feed you.
6)Look, we all want essentially the same things from a textbook.
We want clearly written, well illustrated worked out problems
that allow us to grasp the concept in question so that we can use
it to solve problems and answer conceptual questions. With Sullivan, you get this in great measure.
This is a wonderful textbook for both sudents and teachers. It is
a great book to learn from and a great book to learn to teach from.

Very Good Precalculus Reference

With the sixth edition of this textbook, Sullivan has made significant strides since the fifth edition of the College Algebra portion. The interval notations used to indicate the regions where the value of a function is increasing or decreasing is so much more clear and concise. In contrast to the former use of frequently displaying number lines with pluses and minuses underneath, in which the readings of them were perhaps more of an exercise for the eyes than for the mind, Sullivan revised this mess using parentheses and brackets to indicate test intervals.
As a teacher, I say that this is not the most user-friendly book for an instructor who teaches one hour college algebra classes three times a week. Oftentimes, for me to quickly get the fundamentals across, I have to paraphrase what Sullivan lays out in many of the sections. The language is often too theoretical for several of my students (Many are in non-technical majors but have to complete college algebra as a last mathematics course requirement), and I have to put the symbolic logic sequences into terms that can cross over to applied mathematics. This is not meant to be a criticism, however.
Perhaps the main weaknesses lie in the shortcomings of applied problems, particularly in the sections concerning maxima and minima, and especially in the inequality segments. On a very positive note, however, I will grant that the sixth chapter, which involves logarithms and exponents is quite fascinating. For instance, you have applied problems involving the amount of interest that can be gained after so many years if, say, [money amount]is deposited into an account and accumulates interest at 6% compounded quarterly. Physics problems are also well presented. One interesting tidbit: if you wondered how long it would take for a 300-degree dish to cool down to 100 degrees in an environment that is at room temperature, the formula that can be used, namely Newton's Law of Cooling, is provided. As another example: suppose that a dead animal was discovered in a barn at midnight and its temperature was 80°F° ; the temperature of the barn is kept constant at 60°F; two hours later the temperature of the corpse dropped to 75°F; find the time of death. The formula for this type of problem is also shown.
As added kudos, I especially like the intermittent TI-83 calculator tips. The use of technology in mathematics classes is notably increasing in the community colleges. All in all, this is a finer, more updated version, and it is especially recommended for those who want to go beyond the call of duty and discover new ways of applying mathematics to their daily lives.

Access codes by this publisher is a scam

I bought this book for a class that required the book and the access code for the online class. I bought it new thinking
that the access code would be valid. Unfortunately the access code did not work. After waiting for an hour to speak with
Pearson's representative, he double checked the code, told me it was a valid code, we spent another 25 minutes going over everything on the phone and
then he said he was going to send me an email with instructions on how to replace the code. I asked him to make sure if the new code was going to work and he said yes. Well, the email he sent me was to say that Pearson does not replace access code when the book is purchased outside
the university or college that the book is intended for. In other words, they don't replace codes for books purchased through Amazon.
All that time wasted and being duped by this agent by the fake name of "Dave" who is really answering the phone from India.
Pearson is doing a scam with these access codes and probably the universities are in cahoots with them. The only trustworthy and honorable company here is Amazon who refunded the money right away. I'm sorry to say but don't buy this book from Amazon, you might run into the same problem, even though it's not their fault.
