About the Author

Patrik N. Juslin is associate professor of Psychology at Uppsala University, Sweden, where he teaches courses on music, emotion, perception, and research methodology. He completed his PhD in 1998 and became associate professor in 2004. Juslin has published numerous articles in the areas of expression in music performance, emotional responses to music, music education, and emotion in speech. In 2001, he edited the volume Music and Emotion: Theory and Research together with John Sloboda. Juslin is associate editor of the journals Music Perception and Musicae Scientiae. He is a member of the International Society for Research on Emotions and received ESCOM's 'Young Researcher Award' in 1996. Alongside his work as a researcher, he has also worked professionally as a guitar player.

John Sloboda is Emeritus Professor at Keele, and honorary Professor of Music at Royal Holloway University, London. He has been a member of the School of Psychology at Keele since 1974 and was Director of its Unit for
the Study of Musical Skill and Development founded in 1991. John Sloboda is internationally known for his work on the psychology of music. He is a Fellow of the British Psychological Society, and has been President of both the Psychology and General Sections of the British Association for the Advancement of Science, as well as President of the European Society for the Cognitive Sciences of Music, where he serves on
the editorial board of it's journal Musicae Scientiae. He was recipient of the 1998 British Psychological Society's Presidents Award for Distinguished Contributions to Psychological Knowledge, and in 2004 was
elected to Fellowship of the British Academy. He is author of over 150 publications in the field of music psychology.

The good... the ugly.

Saving one from having to purchase the many different books in the field, if you are just getting into it, the content of the book and format are both useful and enjoyable. But the physical product is so flimsy, to call it a hardcover is an exercise in denial. For a book of this size (and price) that would be well-handled for a long time, yet to be bound less securely then your average telephone book, one can only wonder what they (OUP) could be thinkun' (DOH!). Has Oxford been taken over by a generation of comic book readers?

So ***** for content but ** for physical quality (the paper is quite alright).

But I am not opinionated (no sir).

Unlike its predecessor, Music and Emotion, this Handbook is not focused, covers many areas that are not empirical and barely affective, and therefore is less valuable than the more concise book.

You don't have to be bilingual to enjoy this book

This is a wonderful introduction into bilingualism. This book takes the reader on a journey along the exciting and controversial land of bilingual speakers, countries, researches, and case studies. It includes clear maps and graphs. It is incredible background material for students and a reference for those who have spent some time doing reaserch in any aspect of bilingualism. As you move from chapter to chapter the reading is engrossing and one does not need to interrupt it to check with Oxford English Dictionary for obfuscating words or notions. The text flows. Plus, this book provides a wonderful bibliography that is very useful for linguists, sociolinguists, researchers and students. The reading is enjoyable .

A wee bit out of date.

This was a required text for a course I took in bilingualism. I had high hopes for the book but was unfortunately disappointed at its narrow scope. And, it is horribly out of date. The first chapter, even in its newest edition, refers to Russia as USSR. There are a lot of theories of bilingualism discussed, mostly explained well enough to get the idea. But sometimes, it seems as though the author gets caught up in the explaining and forgets to get to the point. On a positive note, there are numerous examples of bilingual speech presented, many from the author's own experience. The case studies in the latter half of the book are quite interesting as well.
All in all, I would say if you're getting started in the study of bilingualism, this is an okay book to get your feet wet. Howeve, I wouldn't depend solely on this work.

About the Author
Lewis Moore Hopfe (1935—1992) graduated from Baylor University in 1956 with a B.A. in history and religious studies, an M. Div. degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1960, and his Ph.D. in Old Testament studies from Boston University in 1965. Dr. Hopfe began his teaching career in 1965 as an instructor in religious studies at Kendall College, Evanston, Illinois. During his early years of teaching it became apparent that there was a need for an introductory textbook for the study of world religions. He said, “Religion is never a simple subject, and can become complex and intricate to the complete dismay of the beginning student.” His goal was to provide the student with a reasonably brief and readable text that did not shortcut or simplify religions, but did not delve too deeply into the technicalities. Responding to this need the first edition of Religions of the World became a reality and was published in 1979. Dr. Hopfe was “an author, teacher, pastor, archaeologist, college dean, weight lifter, and spiritual guide to students, colleagues, and parishioners” whose lives he touched via the written and spoken word. Religions of the World is his legacy to academia.

Mark R. Woodward is Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Arizona State University and Visiting Professor of Comparative Religions at the Center for Religious and Cross-cultural Studies at Gadjah Mada University in Indonesia. He received his Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology from the University of Illinois and also studied at the Divinity School at the University of Chicago. His research has focused on Islam, Buddhism, Christianity, and indigenous religions in Southeast Asia, especially Indonesia, Burma, and Singapore. For most of the past decade his research has centered on issues of religion, conflict, and violence in Southeast Asia and globally. He is the author, co-author, or editor of five books and many scholarly articles. He has taught the introductory level university course World Religions more than fifty times in the last twenty-five years.

Brett Hendrickson is an Assistant Professor of Religious Studies at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania, where he teaches courses on the religious history of the Americas, religion and healing, religion and public life, and the introductory course on world religions. He received his Ph.D. in Religious Studies from Arizona State University, a Master of Divinity (M.Div.) from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, and an A.B. in Latin American Studies from Columbia University. Hendrickson’s research examines lived religious practices in Latin America and among Latinos and Latinas in the United States, with a special interest in religious and folk healing. His work attempts to explain religious interactions and exchanges among various ethnic and cultural groups in complex political and social contexts. He is the author of Border Medicine: A Transcultural History of Mexican American Curanderismo and several scholarly articles.

Butt & Benjamin - A New Reference Grammar of Modern Spanish

I've been a student of the Spanish language since 1960, lived in Miami for 30 years, in Spain for nearly 20 years. Now, in retirement, I've been teaching Spanish for the past 7 years. In all of those years, I've seen many a grammar book, but there is none that is the equal of the a New Reference Grammar of Modern Spanish by John Butt & Carmen Benjamin.

I didn't develop real fluency in Spanish, until I moved to Spain, and one of the first things I did was to order this book. Without it, I would never have achieved the fluency that I have now. I am often taken to be a native speaker, in part because of the accent I developed living in Miami, but, primarily, it's because of my command of the language made possible by my having used this book to master the grammar.

It's not your typical grammar, meant to be taken chapter by chapter. Rather, it's more like a cookbook of the Spanish language, with chapters devoted to specific grammatical and syntactical issues (and with adequate examples). No matter what aspect of the language you want to now about, this book covers it. If it doesn't cover it, you don't need to know it.

Seriously, it is without equal in the category of Spanish grammar books and is the finest, most accurate and up-to-date grammar book I've ever seen. I have now purchased this book for the 4th time, because, each time it's updated, it just gets better (I would never have believed that possible from the 1st edition).

I highly recommend this book, new or used, with a cover, without a cover. You will NEVER find a better grammar book.

If you want to learn Spanish for regular communications, or improve your Spanish, or you want to be a Spanish teacher of a certified translator/interpreter, this is the book for you.

Great for advanced learners, perhaps less suited for beginning students

I am a non-native graduate student in a Spanish linguistics program. I have a good grasp of Spanish grammar, but often find myself in need of a good guide to consult the exceptions and details of grammar, such as "Why do we say 'el agua' if it is a feminine noun?". I am also a graduate instructor, so I need to explain these sorts of things to my students.

This book is incredibly comprehensive and has been very useful as an advanced language learner seeking to refine and master the intricacies of the language. I highly recommend it to advanced learners, especially if they enjoy reading about subtleties and minutia of how the language works.

I would be less willing to recommend it to those who are still mastering the basics of the language, and want a quick and concise reference manual. The book sometimes goes into minutia--such as whether reflexive verbs should be labeled "reflexive" or "pronominal", and why they are called reflexive verbs. Such discussion may be a bit much for those looking for a quick and dirty answer.

Very Advanced

As the authors say in the introduction, this book is an advanced reference book for fluent or near-fluent speakers of Spanish. This point is made by most reviewers, but it is not emphasized enough. For example,in the verb section, the authors don't even bother with with regular verb conjugation, jumping right into irregular and stem changing verbs (what they call "radical changing" verbs). This can throw off any but the highly advanced learner or the fluent speaker.

In addition to its use as an advanced reference, I've found it to be an interesting venue for browsing. Just open to any page at random and the advanced student will find a wealth of information that he will not be exposed to in any book written for second language learners. I suspect that there is even more here than one would find in a Spanish grammar written for native speakers.

From postmodern reflection on the discourse between Freud and feminists; to deconstructing the essence of gender difference; to a sampler of the intersection between political power and reality with private sexuality, Sexuality Intimacy Power treats sensitive topics with methodical and insightful depth.
