A member of the faculty of the Haas business school at the University of California Berkeley, Naeem teaches Entrepreneurship and Innovation in the MBA program. Naeem is the founder of Startup-Advisor.com and focuses on educating and advising entrepreneurs on all aspects of starting and running a company. Naeem’s entrepreneurial experience includes working directly with six startups, and he has extensive experience in mentoring and coaching founders and CEOs.

Until 2007, Naeem was the president and CEO of Pyxis Technology Inc., a company specializing in advanced chip design software for nanometer technology. Naeem has also been president and CEO of two other high tech startups (Silicon Design Systems and Veridicom, a Bell Labs spin-off that invented the silicon fingerprint sensors today found on most laptops). Naeem has held senior marketing and engineering positions at several companies including Quickturn Design Systems that had an IPO in 1993 and grew to $125M in revenues.

Naeem holds a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from Brown University (magna cum laude), Rhode Island, and a master’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Minnesota. The Cliff Notes for Obtaining Funding

Naeem Zafar clearly articulates everything you need to know to find and secure funding for your business. Although I read the book once through in the very beginning, I found myself coming back to this book over and over again as a reference tool as my company moved through the various stages of maturity.

SECTION ONE: KNOW YOUR OPTIONS
Understand all sources of funding that are available to you as an entrepreneur through various stages of a startup. This is especially helpful because funding needs change with each stage. And as funding needs change, it's important to know what type of investor you will need to approach. Naeem does a great job laying out the profile and motivation behind each type of investor, and the pros and cons of seeking funding with that investor. You'll also find that Naeem does a deeper dive into the world of venture capitalists in this section.

SECTION TWO: PREPARE YOURSELF FOR SEEKING FUNDING
In Section Two, the focus shifts to the entrepreneur. Naeem covers everything an entrepreneur must do to tighten the story and the business plan. I refer to this section as preemptively plugging all the holes that you know investors will be asking about. In addition, Section Two provides helpful tips on networking, communication, and presentation skills. I would advise people to take this part seriously, because this is what differentiates a rookie entrepreneur from a veteran entrepreneur.

SECTION THREE: THE FUNDING PROCESS
Okay, assume you've followed the steps in Section Two, and now you're ready to engage investors. Section Three provides a helpful step-by-step process to securing the funding. In doing so, Naeem also provides insights from the perspectives of both the entrepreneur and the investor. I'm guessing this is where Naeem's nearly 30 years of experience in entrepreneurship comes in handy. This section can really help you set expectations on the rather complicated process of securing funding while avoiding pitfalls that can take you off course.

As for style of writing, Naeem gets to the point with extremely clear and concise writing. This is business writing done properly.

Practical Advice, Clear Explanations--A Must Have For All New & Experienced Entrepreneurs

This is the best book I've found to clearly explain the options for funding a business. Filled with practical advice, examples and links, it's a must-read for every potential and current entrepreneur.

Some examples: Ever wondered how (and how much) VCs make their money? Is there any difference between angel funding, early stage, and seed funding? How about the importance of a business plan?

Zafar's book gives the answers to these and many other questions I've come across during 20 years as a sometimes-entrepreneur. It goes beyond covering the usual financing strategies (angels, VCs) and includes information on when/how to use alternative sources such as Friends/Family, SBIR grants, SBA loans, etc.

Best of all, though, is Zafar's inclusion of examples when things didn't go as planned. Rarely do entrepreneurs have the courage to detail failures or lessons learned.

Best book I've read related to entrepreneurship in a very long time. While most books attempt to dazzle you with concepts and abstracts, this is a true how-to guide for those actually starting businesses, not just thinking about it.

ending left me wanting more

This is my first book written by Anita Stansfield. I loved the story and couldn't put the book down. In fact I finished it in one day! I was disappointed in that the end left me wanting more as it just didn't finish the story. She just left you hanging at the end and with no real resolution to the story. I read the book 2 teaser chapter in the end and quickly realized that these should have been one book. Now I realize she has spread it out across 4 books! Bugger. Second bugger is that they are over $9 each. Sigh... maybe I will wait for price reduction. I gave it a 4 star rating as the ending literally leaves you on the end of the your seat waiting for an ending. Really want to read the rest, but not willing to shell out $30 for the remaining 3 books. Maybe a Christmas wish list.

I enjoy books with a period them, but I felt bamboozled on this one. Things took a long time to develop, and then when things finally started to speed up it moved in the wrong direction! Suddenly, what I thought was going to be a sweet love story of overcoming obstacles, turned into an erotic romance! What a waist of time.

Nothing makes me more angry than a book that is written with the sole object to make you buy the next book. I have no issue with books that have multiple characters that spin off into other books, but when the first book has no real ending-----!@!@@$##.

This book had other issues as well:

1)I NEVER skim unless the book is full of filler. Well, I found myself skimming like never before in this book;

2) Left hanging on several issues (again just to get you to buy the next one--which doesn't work with me) like was her father's death a suicide or was he murdered, what happened to her husband?, where is the mystery fortune hidden?, etc.

Excellent Introductory HCS12 Microcontroller Textbook

I used this textbook in my college level microcontroller course. The book is easy to understand and covers key areas like: ADC/DAC, Timers, serial port programming, ALU, LCD and keyboard interfacing. I like that chapter review questions are organized according to the sub-chapter they are in. The book also includes a chapter 0 for anyone that needs to refresh their knowledge on basic computing knowledge like logical operations or converting numbers between decimal and hexadecimal.

Had to buy this for my Introduction to Microcontrollers class and I gotta say it isn't bad. Not bad at all. Gives a general introduction to the workings of microcontrollers using the HCS12, explaining how registers work, how to properly use memory and more. It starts out with some simple loading instructions and addition using Assembly and goes on to data serialization, DAC, timers and more. Paired with a Dragon 12+ development board, you can't go wrong.

Well written and easy to understand. This was purchased as a textbook for a college level course. What was missing from the lecture was easily found in the textbook. Well worth the investment.
