A must addition to any designer's toolkit

As designers we know designing should be an iterative process and this book delves into teaching how to navigate this process by improving your communication skills. I specially liked the idea of keeping in mind the human side of the design practice: we are not only designing for human, we are also humans creating the designs. Therefore we need to truly connect with the people that will make possible those designs. This connection is what can enable us to work as a team and produce the best user experiences.

Plus the book is a joy to read as it combines great story telling and practical advice. Highly recommended!

Useful Information at any point of your careeer

Tom and O'Reilly have put together a great book. It's approachable and casual while maintaining an intelligent and authoritative air, which is exactly the kind of thing Tom is encouraging all designers (or anyone interacting with stakeholders really) to do.

ADD goes from personal anecdote, to practical advice, and back. This makes the reading interesting, the information helpful, and the ways to apply his experiences and subsequent take-aways to your own life/career a straightforward process. The information Tom provides in this book feels so obvious and intuitive. Yet while reading it, I found myself realising I was only practicing half or so of the techniques he suggests, despite years of experience working with a wide range of clients. The things I did already know and do mindfully, I found validating to see someone else express in a published book. A great way to shore up some confidence, and build upon that foundation.

Overall, this is a great book. It's easy to read. It's not about the nitty-gritty of technical design process. It's a higher-level book that discusses concepts and techniques that will help you be a better person and a better designer to work with. After all, no one works in a vacuum (except vacuum repairmen and astronauts).

I value this book like a Mormon boy values his scriptures. I keep two physical copies in the house and one next to the seat of my car. Of course, I also keep the digital version with me in my Kindle app and even purchased a PDF version from O'Reilly to use on my iPad Pro so I can write in the margins all of the inspirational thoughts induced by reading the book. I even make it a point to read every footnote, highlighting the ones that really stand out to me, for better understanding of the context. I find that when I don't read even just a couple of paragraphs of this book each day I fall into the temptations of not articulating my design decisions as well, or even at all. As an amateur designer turned developer, I feel like it has helped me to not only better communicate with stakeholders in projects in which I'm involved, but also has given me methods, vocabulary, and a better angle for speaking with designers.

Alkaline Water Antioxidant?

Dr Parker does a great job of dispelling the myths surrounding alkaline water. This is a very easy read and will explain what alkaline water can do, is and isn't. The fact that anybody can own an appliance that can infuse molecular hydrogen into water isn't well understood in our culture. But, in time, this will become accepted and every kitchen will have one, just like microwaves, refers, dishwashers, and stoves.

About the Author
Bulent Atalay is a scientist and artist with roots in Turkey, England, and the United States. He is a professor of physics at the University of Mary Washington, an adjunct professor at the University of Virginia, and a member of the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton. He is the author of Math and the Mona Lisa (Smithsonian Books, 2004), and a frequent lecturer on the genius of Leonardo.

Keith Wamsley, is trained in classics and literature. He teaches secondary school in Fredericksburg, Virginia, and was a contributing editor on Math and the Mona Lisa (Smithsonian Books, 2004).

Leonardo's Universe

There are many reasons to read this wonderful book. It has the gorgeous graphics of an elegant coffee table book but is also a lively, rigorous and informative narrative one wants to read in the comfort of his or her den. The authors are Renaissance men themselves and these qualities are reflected in the book. This account of Leonardo's life and the world in which he lived is clearly written and will appeal to the layman as well as to scholars. The illustrations and photographs are exceptionally well chosen. The narrative is enhanced by scores of supplementary vignettes such as, "Ideal Proportions", "Leonardo's Mirror Text", "Pyramidal Composition", "Mathematical Underpinnings",and "Leonardo as an Urban Planner". This is the special sort of book that never loses its freshness.

Stunningly beautiful overview of da Vinci's creativity

I am just beginning to inhale this huge volume of Leonardo's history, insights, art and science. It's truly fascinating reading with stunningly beautiful drawings, paintings and photographs. Each page is a visual delight!! It is a treasured addition to my collection of art and science books and an inspiration to my photographic visions. However, "Leonardo's Universe", is more than the usual historical review of da Vinci's genius. It is an inspiration to all artists and scientists who endeavor to transcend current perceptions of art and scientific knowledge and leap beyond incremental approaches.

The creative connection between art and science was one of the themes that was exploited by the acclaimed NASA Institute for Advanced Concepts (NIAC). The NIAC was funded by NASA from 1998 through August 2007 to inspire, select and fund revolutionary advance concepts for future aerospace endeavors. The NIAC expanded on the creative genius of numerous scientists and artists from da Vinci to modern day Einstein and Picasso, and others, to inspire thinking and concepts that could have significant impact on future aerospace missions. Bulent Atalay's book "Math and the Mona Lisa" was one of the primary references used by NIAC as an example of the connection between art, math and science. His latest book, co-authored with Keith Wamsley, will also be an essential reference and inspiration for creative scientists and "techno" artists and a treasured addition to any library focused on art and science.

An absolutely superb book--very highly recommended!

I picked up this book because of it's alluring cover, and wasn't expecting what was inside. I have always been fascinated by history so I expected that a book on Leonardo would be interesting and worth my time. I wasn't prepared for the stunning pictures of the art and architecture of the Leonardo's universe, and the very cogent explanation the author makes for the centrality of the Renaissance and Leonardo in particular in the western tradition.
I can not recommend this book strongly enough. It's is beautifully written and beautifully illustrated. Absorbing it provides the reader with an intensely educational experience, and the education you get from it is important. Knowing about the Renaissance and Leonardo's critical role in it is very important for people who want a liberal arts education. This book makes the significance of this period and the giants who inhabited it accessible and meaningful. Get it.

Neither a hands-on investment manual nor a basic introduction to investing, Kansas's book straddles the divide between those two extremes, but has trouble finding a comfortable spot. Kansas tries too hard to reach casual readers, as when he compares the New York Stock Exchange to a lemonade stand or a trading specialist to a traffic cop, two simple analogies that give way to a stream of jargon and technical details that may overwhelm readers unfamiliar with big finance. Luckily, Kansas never strays far from the wry humor he uses to enliven the finer points. For example, in a discussion of the high risks of venture capital, Kansas writes, "Venture capital is a lot as its name applies, though one is tempted to place 'ad' before 'venture.'" The book isn't afraid to wade into controversies such as Henry Blodgett's questionable stock recommendations, and at its best it feels as though an experienced financial journalist is gossiping with the reader over drinks. As its title suggests, this book is a primer, providing backgrounds on every major type of investment or financial activity, with a pleasing economy of style that incorporates sidebars for people seeking more in-depth information on how to read stock listings or the history of the Dow Jones Industrial Average. The ideal reader of this book isn't a total financial novice, but readers with an at least cursory understanding of trading, investments and economics will find Kansas' book a rewarding read.

Complete? Guidebook? Not so much.

The "Getting Going" series in the Wall Street Journal is a good one, well worth reading, and has helped the WSJ become more relevant to those of us who have less than a billion dollars net worth. (In my case, $999,999,999 less.) That's why I had high hopes for this book. While it does its job admirably, the question is: What is it's job? The title suggests it is "Complete" and a "Guidebook." In reality, its job is to be "A brief, concise introduction at a high level to financial and economic terms."

THAT job, it does admirably. You'll get a overview of all the terms you're likely to run into: stocks, bonds, options, futures, etc. But a brief overview is about all it does. There are some pearls, a few insightful comments, and (the best part) a nice selection of web sites for future reference.

If you're looking for a quick read, and a concise overview of finances and American economics, this book is very good. But if you think it will actually help you do something practical with your own finances, you may be disappointed by its superficial treatment.

Scoring note: The book would have been a 4 if the title had been "A Brief Overview of American Economics and Investing."
