This book was required for a college course I took, but it is still a fantastic tool! It is one of the best textbooks I have used, and as a senior I have been through quite a few. It contains many ideas for interdisciplinary subjects in the classroom as well as many projects and activities to engage students in the classroom. I hope to use many ideas throughout my career.

Intensely Quotable

Oh, my....she's good. Not only that, but among the best - gut-wrenchingly good. Scattered poetry is placed in a conscious context for far greater clarity. I love the way she thinks, the way she chews things over, works on them so painstakingly, tosses them out so lightly. This book gets naked, and I think she's bravery incarnate to be putting it out there. I have felt her pain, touched her spirit at her invitation. She inspires.

And that's just the first two sections. The rest is dang good too, even if it goes way over my head in places and gives me the distinct sensation of being in the company of one very much smarter and wiser than me.

Yet none of that really describes what this book IS. I have never come across anything like it before. Every word is a delight, and it's packed with intensely quotable lines. I wish I could write with such force. Expect this one to mess with your brain a little... or a lot!

I'm not sure the title fits -- Rats are known more for HIDING things...

People deal differently with both the good and bad in life. Loss, pain, and doubt are often dealt with in prayer or in alcohol, in conversation or bad poetry. Chila Woychik creates art.

"On Being A Rat" is a tapestry of poetry and lyrical prose, masquerading as a collection of autobiographical essays. The collection is expressive and raw: not as an open wound, but instead like the flesh of an arm which has been scrubbed too clean. The result is fresh skin, peeled back and red, both stinging and refreshing in its exposure to the elements.

As I read, I couldn't help but be reminded by Douglas Coupland's "Life After God" (in quality and tone, if not in style), with hints of Galway Kinell's "Book of Nightmares."

The author peels back the curtain of normal human restraint and, in response to the innocently (if disingenuously) asked, "how's it going" rips out her own wounded heart, places it grumpily in your hand, and says, "THAT. Is how I'm doing."

That's part 1: The Observations. In this section, Chila looks at her own struggles with trauma, with loss and doubt, and with friendship where it is needed most. The book would be worthwhile even if that was all there was to it. But then there are parts 2 and 3.

In the section section of "On Being A Rat," Chila explores writing, in the same vein as she explored her own psyche in part 1. She offers sage words of advice, sprinkled liberally throughout -- but mostly, it's an in-depth look at her own struggles and methods. From practical information like looking for people to do book notices for you, to less material narratives on taming her personal muse, this section isn't a how-to, but a glimpse into the journey of one writer's life in words.

Part 3, Nature Notes, is somehow misleading in its title. From the first essay in the section, we see that Chila is not writing purely about nature, but about what those elements of nature do to a person, spiritually and physiologically. In part, the essays are about remembrances, and in part odes to the wonder of the Earth. Each of the three pieces in part 3 are beautifully written, and in their own way a part of the whole that is "On Being a Rat."

Pick up the book -- and don't forget to keep turning those pages, past the acknowledgments, for her "Letters to Friends, on Writing." These are also instructive, in their own way.

In "On Being A Rat," Chila Woychik makes some assumptions, and takes some risks. She assumes, with this book, that, since you went to the trouble of picking it up, you are asking, "Hey, how's it going?" More brazen still, she is giving you the benefit of the doubt: she is assuming you actually meant it. Whether talking about doubt and trauma, or the writing spirit, or even nature, Chila takes the risk of baring her soul to any complete stranger who cares to look.

In short, any good author will inspire the creativity in others. As a writer, when I read a Stephen King, I am inspired to be more prolific.

When I read Chila Woychik, I want to be a better writer.

Some passages will stay with you forever

I'm a woman of few words, particularly when I am moved. This book speaks to anyone who, like a rat, has been cursed and pursued for simply trying to survive, has felt alone in a crowd of his own kind, but has searched for and at last found a few square inches of security. "Oh God for a platform and feet that dangle less."

The Best

If you're a guitar player and if you dig Charlie Christian's playing... this is the best study of his playing you'll find anywhere. Ayeroff must have worked his Ayer off... sorry. This was a super undertaking - all the great Charlie Christian stuff is here in minute detail, with copious notes, all to help you understand the man's music and to play it yourself, if you're willing to put in the work. Some may argue that the author killed his own book sales by not including tablature... but if you don't read notation, and if you really love Christian's style and want to learn it, this just might be a strong enough reason to break over and finally learn to read. This is the case with me -- I'm a so-so reader, but I'm getting much better, just working through the book. Highly recommended for your shelf, if you're a Christian fan.

About the Author
Philip Geer lives in Singapore where he directs Mentaurs, an educational consultancy that prepares students for the SAT, GRE, and other standardized tests. From 1978 until 2001 he taught English for the Singapore Ministry of Education at the junior college level.

Stephen Reiss operates the Math Magician and the Reiss SAT Seminars, both of which are test preparation centers serving California students.

This book is just terrible, I have been the ACT and now SAT ...

This book is just terrible, I have been the ACT and now SAT test prep teacher at my high school. With the newly designed SAT, I have been trying to find any and all resources to help prepare my students. I bought this book because I thought having 6 practice tests would give me a huge library to pull questions from. However, I have noticed that this book is useless. The math section has numerous errors. Even though they may have the correct work in explanations, the answer they give is just flat out wrong. The reading test gives artificially difficult passages. There were many times where a question could have multiple correct answers based on what the passage says. The English and Language usage test is another joke. The questions here are artificially difficult because the answer choices contain 4 answers that no normal person would actually select. I found myself on numerous occasions thinking that ALL of the answers were wrong. Not to mention the explanations in this section are bad as well. Instead of explaining why all the answer choices are wrong, it just explains why the correct answer is correct. Many times these explanations are bad and don't actually fix the sentence. I run weekend study sessions with an English and Science teacher (I am certified in math) and we all think that this book is just bad. I do not normally write reviews on Amazon, but I wish someone would have written this review for me to see before I spend money on it. Stay away from this if you want to prep for the new SAT.

what is the greatest value of x (assume x is a positive integer)

My son has started practicing the test on this book. Right in practice Test 1 for Maths calculator section, Q 17 Page # 79, the answer given is wrong. The question:
"A list of the weights of five, sixth-grade students are listed below:
x, 108, 112, 113, 119
If 112 is median value of the weights, what is the greatest value of x (assume x is a positive integer)?
A) 107 B) 111 C) 112 D) 118

The answer to this question should be 112, as it doesn't mention anything about the mode which means two students can have the same weight, however the answer given is 111.

I would like to know from Barron's what is the right answer? if it is 111, would like to know the explanation. If it is indeed 112, would like to understand what is the quality check process put in so that the students are preparing it correctly. I am now wary of using this book for SAT preparation.
