About the Author
Mercer Mayer is the writer and illustrator for Little Monster(R) and Little Critter(R) books. He began writing and illustrating children's books in 1966 and since that time, he has published over 300 titles. Mayer currently lives in New England with his wife Gina, who co-wrote many of the popular Little Critter(R) books. He has four children and two grandchildren.

Teaching Forgiveness

Little Critter is one of those characters I remember from my childhood. His surly attitude is always changed by the end of his books. I was excited to share Little Critter with my son. In We All Need Forgiveness, he is having one of those days when things just aren't going his way. Everyone around him, including the family pets, seems to be contributing to his bad day by ruining his toy or making him drop his cookie. By the end Little Critter realizes sometimes he needs forgiveness too and that it's important to forgive others quickly. I love the moral of this book. I do wish there had been a moment when Little Critter told his friends and family he forgave them rather than just accepting their forgiveness. Overall though the story is sound and one that my son enjoyed. It's hard not to love all the detailed illustrations and fun expressions of Little Critter!

Forgiveness is given and received.

Recently, we took our normal trip to vision therapy for my two youngest children. My nephew Jaylin was along for the day, which meant he and I had an hour to spend entertaining ourselves during their sessions. Before leaving the house, I packed some of August's Tommy Mommy books and a few snacks in a bag just for 5-year-old Jaylin. In "We All Need Forgiveness" by Mercer Mayer, one of my favorite authors, Jaylin learned so much about the relationship between receiving and giving forgiveness; friendship, and just how quickly we should forgive one another.
He really liked this book. Although he needed help with words, he understood all of the concepts and practiced them right away. He delivered them in his own perception, explaining them to his big cousin much later the same day, and the lesson stuck with him.
This is what I call an effective tool for teaching God's rules for living a right standing life, and that right early.

Forgiveness is something that we all expect when we do something wrong, whether intentionally or not. But forgiving someone else when they have done something to us is not so easy. As adults, and especially Christians, we know that we are required to forgive. Colossians 3:13 says, "Forgive each other because the Lord forgave you."
Little Critter is all out of sorts because his friends and even some of his family have done things that have made him downright mad. The last thing he wants to do is forgive them. But of course the tables are eventually turned and he is in need of forgiveness. Things definitely look different from that perspective.
Mercer Mayer has once again used the delightful animals in his Little Critter's series to help you teach your child a valuable life lesson. Come along with Little Critter and his friends as they explore giving and receiving forgiveness. The book is a great jumping off point for discussions on why we should forgive and how we should go about seeking forgiveness.
