Jungen, das neue schwache Geschlecht? Noch vor gar nicht langer Zeit war es umgekehrt und die Frau galt als das zu fördernde Geschlecht. Im Zuge der Frauenbewegung wurden berechtigterweise zahlreiche Programme eingeführt, die speziell die Mädchen fördern sollten. Die deutsche Bildungspolitik richtete lange ihre Bemühungen nur zugunsten der Mädchen aus. Mädchen bekamen Privilegien. Zwar besetzen Männer auch heute noch immer die meisten Spitzenpositionen in Politik und Wirtschaft, verdienen besser und können laut dem Bestseller von Allan und Barbara Pease besser einparken, aber sind die Jungen immer noch in der Vorreiterposition oder hinkt der männliche Nachwuchs den Mädchen in der Schule hinterher?
Laut der Verfassung der Bundesrepublik Deutschland sollen beide Geschlechter im Schulsystem die gleichen Chancen und Möglichkeiten haben, denn das Grundgesetz schreibt vor, dass niemand wegen seiner Abstammung, seiner Rasse, seiner Sprache, seiner Heimat und Herkunft, seines Glaubens, seiner religiösen oder politischen Anschauungen und eben auch wegen seines Geschlechtes, benachteiligt oder bevorzugt werden darf. (vgl. Grundgesetz, 1949, Artikel 3) Aber haben Jungen und Mädchen tatsächlich dieselben Chancen auf eine gute Schulkarriere? Bietet das System Schule Jungen wie Mädchen dieselben Bedingungen? Werden die Fähigkeiten und Potenziale von beiden Geschlechtern gleichviel gefördert? Dieser Frage soll in der vorliegenden Arbeit nachgegangen werden.

Great bench reference for students

This book is a concise and well-organized collection of excellent photomicrographs. As a student of clinical microbiology, this atlas has helped to reinforce my ability to discern subtle detail in gram stain interpretation. It is a handy little book and a good reference for bench work.

It's free. Too bad the author didn't include the bombing images of Coventry, or London. The first long range bombing was done by the Central Powers led by Germany in World War One.
Good images of the results of the Allies bombing during WW 2. Keep mind that Germany also did.long bombings.

Not worth the money

All this said is clean and cut the gourd. Her use of cloth that was a little hard to make or buy at the time of the pioneers instead of leather from the animals they ate or rope was incomprihensible to me as is the use of shoe laces when leather (or rope) is very easy to come by at your local craft store, DIY or on line. I'm sure that homesteaders in the middle of Kansas had sea shells to clean out the gourds too as she sugests using. How about flint? I don't suggest using her methods of cleaning out gourds at all though, since it's an incredably hard job even with modern tools. You can still get the look of vintage items and save your hands in the process. I use a wire brush that is supposed to attach to a drill (I just hold it) and then I use sand paper in various grits depending on how smooth the inside surface needs to be. Bottom line, you can see all of the items she makes on the cover and unless you are actually holding classes on how the pioneers did it, I wouldn't bother opening the book. If you are really into the primative look, check out gourds made by some of the people in Africa, or South America. Much more interesting and decorative.

Impressive alteration of Pride&Prejudice; told from Lizzy's POV; her voice just comes right off the pages!

Debut author Jan Hahn's novel, "An Arranged Marriage" begs the question, "Can a marriage of convenience ever lead to true love?" In Hahn's impressive alteration of Jane Austen's "Pride & Prejudice," days after Miss Elizabeth Bennet stringently refuses the proposal of Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy at Hunsford, her beloved father dies, leaving the family with meager resources and an estate entailed to their toad-eating cousin, Mr. Collins. Half a year later, as the ladies of Longbourn are packing to make way for the new owner, Mr. Darcy offers for Elizabeth's hand once again. Despite her passionate dislike and distrust of the man, Elizabeth, with a grievous and bitter heart, accepts, saving her family from ruination and despair. Refreshingly narrated from Elizabeth's keen and often caustic perspective, we are privy to her inner most thoughts as she struggles to conquer her turmoil of the loss of her father; the disgrace of her youngest sister; the humiliation of her eldest sister; the anxiety of nearly losing her home; and of course, the distress from this arranged marriage. And yet most disconcerting to her psyche is her blossoming passion for the last man in the world she could ever be prevailed upon to marry.

Hahn's mastery of Regency eloquence, as well as the seamless injections of Austen's most famous prose is pitch perfect. Most appreciated is her deft understanding of romance-- sans all the tiresome throbbing and moaning one reads so often in many Darcy and Elizabeth adaptations. "His voice was as low and resonant as the diva's was high and clear, and I thought how lovely it would be to hear such words on his lips if we truly cared for each other. `Caro mi ben, credimi almen, senza di te languisce it cor.' `My dear beloved, believe me at least, without you my heart languishes.' With that last phrase, I turned and found him gazing directly into my eyes as he spoke." p.80. Without forced melodrama, Hahn spins an intriguing back-story, weaving Darcy's sister Georgianna, Mrs. Darcy's new lady maid, George Wickham and even Colonel Fitzwilliam through a snare of secrets and deception. Like Austen, Hahn successfully balances drama and humour. Even showing the stoic Mr. Darcy to behold a cutting wit in regards to his loose-lipped cousin, ""Fitzwilliam? What is he now, an old woman?" p.172

As in Austen's original, Elizabeth has not yet discovered that Darcy rescued Lydia from disaster, or comprehends that he could still be in-love with her after her headstrong refusal at Hunsford. His blunders as a new husband and his propensity to hold private matters close, feed her doubts and suspicion. I found myself holding my breath on more than one honest sparring - hoping and praying they would be able to "endeavor to practice the niceties of polite society." p.77. But as they learned to get on, more often I found myself laughing out loud at Elizabeth's musings. "He smiled and kissed my hand before releasing it. We then retired for the night, each to our separate rooms, and I was even more aware than usual that we lay sleeping with only a wall and an unlocked heart between us. Did I say heart? I meant door. Truly, I did. Indeed, I meant door." p.94

I first discovered the writings of "JanH" February of 2007 on-line at Mrs. Darcy's Story Site. In fact I read this very story in one sitting, into the wee hours of the morning, only to discover to my horror, for some unknown reason, my computer would not scroll past Chapter 12! Fortunately some kind soul at the site's Forum sent me a link so that I could finish the story. Ever since I have long wished that this talented author would publish her stories, so that this confirmed fan-girl could have them in my belonging. At last, this whimsical wish has come to fruition. Congratulations, Jan Hahn! In a demesne of numerous Darcy and Elizabeth books available these days, "An Arranged Marriage" is at the top of my stacks, ready to be re-read. Again. And again. Wherever the book falls open. It's THAT enjoyable! A must read. I look forward to reading her next offering, "The Journey" in Fall 2011.

Can't get enough!

I first read this book in .pdf version when I was living in Senegal, West Africa. Loved it then, and still love it now! I was skeptical when I first started getting into these 'what if' stories. But I am a convert, through and through. Not to say that all of them are masterpieces, but Jan Hahn definitely deserves 5 stars for this masterpiece. It was clever, entertaing and did not delve too far from the expected. Ok, there were a few lingering looks and sexual buildups that would never be seen in an Austen novel of the time, but it was a great story and wrapped up very nicely. Keep them coming, please.

Wonderfully romantic and intriguing book!

Although this book is told from Elizabeth's perspective, one gains much insight into the character, and even childhood, of Mr. Darcy. The book transported me back in time to an era of romance and beauty, to Georgian England, London and Pemberley. I never wanted to stop reading. It was intriguing...a fascinating book and one I look forward to reading again and again.

I have to admit, Mr. Darcy is my favorite character in the original book, as well as this one, but Elizabeth does run a close second. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has a love of Jane Austen and the books written of that era. You will fall in love with the characters all over.
