This third volume in Moller's authoritative reference work describes muzzleloading percussion shoulder arms procured by the U.S. government for issue to federal and state armed forces in the period that includes the Civil War.
These twenty-five years were an exciting time in the history of shoulder arms. During the 1840s, only a handful of American manufacturers were capable of producing significant quantities of arms having fully interchangeable components. By the early 1850s, at least one firm was producing rifles with close enough tolerances to be considered fully interchangeable. And thanks to the invention of the expanding bullet, rifled arms could be used by an army's entire infantry. For the first time, line infantry were equipped with arms capable of rapid reloading and of consistently hitting a man-sized target at distances as great as three hundred yards.
Like the first two volumes of American Military Shoulder Arms, this exhaustive reference work will be a must for serious arms collectors, dealers, and museum specialists.

At Long Last
By E. P. Schreier
To those deeply immersed in the gun the collecting world, hearing the exclamation "Moller's Volume III is for sale!" is like hearing that the siege at Mafeking was lifted, and/or experiencing the feeling of euphoria one must have had on V-E Day and Christmas morning all rolled up into one. For 19 years, serious students of US Military firearms have eagerly awaited and anticipated the release of this much heralded volume. Finally, it is here and it does not disappoint. Some have called the now three volume set, "Flayderman's on steroids", an oblique reference to the venerable Flayderman's Guide to Antique American Firearms and their Values and by all positive measures it is indeed, "on steroids" as it is bigger, better and complete with more information on the subject than any other work extant.
No other book, or series of books, on American military firearms can hold a candle to the scholarship and information contained in the 612 pages of AMSA, Vol. III. It covers the period of 1840 - 1865. During that period US Military firearms transitioned from flintlock to percussion, from smoothbore to rifled, from hand work by artisan contractors to mass production in New England factories. It was during this time period that the United States changed dramatically from and agrarian society to a bustling industrial power with a booming economy. It was 25 years of rapid change and growth that went unrivaled for the next one hundred years.
Moller's AMSA Vol. III chronicles the evolution and changes to firearms technology over this 25 year period with exacting detail and articulate clarity. The book starts out with a description of the development of the percussion system of firearms ignition and then covers the process of alterations made to former flintlock muskets converting them to the new and innovative system. State by state and Federal Armory by armory, Moller covers every aspect of alterations imaginable, describing exactly how it was accomplished and the details of each variation in style and method. Then he sorts out the enigma of the US Model 1841 Rifle breaking it down by every manufacturer and every variant. The US Model 1842 muskets, rifled and unrifled are covered, followed by the US Model 1847 musketoons and then the classic US Model 1855 Rifle Musket. The book finishes up with the US 1861, 1863 & 1864 rifled muskets and the various myriad of contractors that manufactured them. If you are a student of Civil War firearms you will find that the information contained herein will change how you may have previously viewed the contracting, procuring, manufacturing, inspection and issue of rifled muskets during this time period.
The appendixes to the book run fifteen sections of interesting and enlightening material and cover almost 100 pages by themselves.
Second only to the joyous news that AMSA Vol. III is in print and for sale is the word that AMSA Vol's I & II are now in print once again and available. Originally published simultaneously in 1993, AMSA Vol I covered the Colonial and Revolutionary War period while AMSA Vol. II covered the post Revolutionary War period to the end of the flintlock era. Weighing in at 517 and 534 pages respectively, the combined volumes were responsible for rewriting much of what was then known about early American Military firearms, especially the 1803 Harpers Ferry rifle originally thought to have accompanied Lewis & Clark on their 3 year westward trek. Published originally by the University Press of Colorado, these two works have been out of print for 19 years and command prices of $600.00 - $800.00 from current internet sources. Now faithfully reproduced in paperback by The University of New Mexico Press, AMSA Vol. I & II may be purchased for $95.00 each. AMSA Vol. III hardback bound is also $95.00.
Moller's triumphant and seminal work sets a high standard of research on this subject matter for other authors and is never likely to be surpassed.

Oustanding!
By robcox1
Excellent breadth of coverage and an amazing amount of detail. The text can be a little dry, but this is not the kind of book that you purchase expecting it to be a page turner. If you have any interest in the topic at all, buy this book. It has already paid off for me; after reading it I recognized a known Confederate conversion of an 1840 musket at an auction. I also recognized a Whitney made musket that had been altered to appear to be a Richmond rifle-musket. I walked out with a real Confederate used musket at a fraction of the price another fellow paid for his fake. The book doesn't actually cover Confederate arms, but the info is so complete that you end up learning so much more than what you would expect. This book gives you the details you need to know to be able to make rational purchases.

A Must for American Martial Arms Collectors
By Baba Jim
Any collector of U S military arms knows the work of George Moller. His books are a must for anyone with an interest in the subject. This third volume in the series covers the percussion muzzle loaders and the flintlock alterations to percussion, the era from the 1840's through the end of the Civil War. Especially valuable is the extensive chapter on the U S Model 1841 Rifle also known as tthe Mississippi Rifle. The old saying goes, "buy the book before you buy the gun. This book is a must! His first two volumes cover the flintlock era up to the early 1840's. These first two have long been out of print in hard copy and are expensive. They have been reissued in soft cover.
