About the Author
Warren Carter is Professor of New Testament at Brite Divinity School in Fort Worth, with a Ph.D. from Princeton Theological Seminary. Before moving to Brite in 2007, he taught for 17 years at Saint Paul School of Theology in Kansas City. His scholarly work has focused on the gospels of Matthew and John, and he has focused on the issue of the ways in which early Christians negotiated the Roman empire. In addition to numerous scholarly articles, he is the author of many books including The Roman Empire and the New Testament; What Does Revelation Reveal?; The New Testament: Methods and Meanings (with Amy-Jill Levine); and God in the New Testament published by Abingdon Press. He has also contributed to numerous church resources and publications and is a frequent speaker at scholarly and church conferences.

Amy-Jill Levine is E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Professor of New Testament Studies at Vanderbilt University Divinity School. She is the author of numerous books and articles on Christian origins, anti-Jewish theologies, feminism, formative Judaism, and the search for the "Historical Jesus." She has written The Misunderstood Jew: The Church and the Scandal of the Jewish Jesus, edited a twelve-volume series, the Feminist Companions to the New Testament and Early Christian Literature, and been awarded grants from the Mellon Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the American Council of Learned Societies.

Why did they do that?

I grew up in the Roman Catholic Church, before Vatican II, and heard the gospel and epistles read and preached on from my early years both in church and in parochial schools. The messages stayed with me over the years but had very little meaning for my everyday life. Later, when I read scripture on my own I developed a new sense of respect for what the scriptures were trying to tell me but I realized that in order to really understand scripture one has to read the story behind the story. Those of us living in twenty-first century United States cannot just jump into the New Testament and fully understand what the various characters were talking about or what the writers were trying to convey to the people for whom they were writing two thousand years ago in other languages. The New Testament: Methods and Meanings by Warren Carter and Amy-Jill Levine offers explanations and insights into the text and allows us as lay people to understand more fully these sacred texts. Recently I have been presenting the Fourth Gospel, the Gospel of John, in my Sunday School group. One cannot understand this Gospel unless one understands the conflict the early Christians had with the Jewish synagogue leaders. Carter and Levine do an excellent job of presenting the background of this conflict which one would not realize by just reading John. Without this conflict we, as Christians, might still be a Jesus sect of Judaism. I find this kind of information brings life to the Scripture and makes it relevant to my daily life now, life to be lived, rather than obscure stories of a Jesus far away and long ago.

Useful but definitely not my favorite

The writing is sort of dry and I tend to roll my eyes several times throughout each chapter. They do a good job of pointing out areas of portions of scripture that seemingly contradict other portions of scripture and highlight stories within biblical passages that deserve a little more critical study due to conflicting historical evidence, etc.... However, while introducing the reader to several different methods for interpretation, they also lay out claims and information that they present as historical or archaeological "facts" that may lead a reader to question the validity or dependability of the scripture passage that is up for discussion - which is fine if that is their goal. However, they do not provide any footnotes, endnotes or even a bibliography so that you can study further to form your own opinions. So, you have no idea where they are getting their ideas or "facts" from. All I can do is make notes in the margins when I come along information or proposed "facts" that are new to me and hope that I can remember to find time to look into them further at a later time.

About the Author
Hector Malot (1830-1907) was a French writer born in La Bouille, Seine-Maritime. He studied law in Rouen and Paris, but eventually literature became his passion. He worked as a dramatic critic for Lloyd Francais and as a literary critic for "L'Opinion Nationale." His first book, published in 1859, was" Les Amants." Malot eventually wrote more than 70 books. By far his most famous book is "Sans Famille" ("Nobody's Boy, " 1878), which deals with the travels of the young orphan Remi, who is sold to the street musician Vitalis at age 10. "Sans Famille" gained fame as a children's book, though it was not originally intended as such. He announced his retirement as an author of fiction in 1895, but in 1896 he returned with the novel "L'amour Dominateur" as well as the account of his literary life "Le Roman de mes Romans" (The Novel of my Novels).

A wonderful book

This is a book in my father's collection. I read it when I was 8 or 9 and just read it again recently. In Vietnamese, it is translated as: "Khong Gia Dinh" or "Vo Gia Dinh", meaning "No Family". It is a masterpiece in literature, and it is still in print in Vietnam. It makes a wonderful children book and a deeply moving and meaningful story for the adults as well.
It is a story about an orphan boy, abandoned by his family. He was raised by his kind adopted mother, and was sold by his adopted father in hardship to a traveling man who eventually, became his teacher and a father-figure. With his teacher, he learned to play music and perform on the street with 3 intelligent dogs and a monkey. He traveled through the towns of France, and through life twist and turn, eventually, lead to the ultimate search for his real family.
The book provides insightful description of life on the street and heart warming relationship through life struggles and survival.

A BOOK YOU WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER

NOBODY'S BOY was introduced to me in elementary school while growing up in Holland. It was one of the best books I had ever read and my parents gave it to me for 'Sinterklaas', which is a day on which we exchanged presents. The translated Dutch title is "Alone in the world". It's a story about a boy without a family, his ups and downs and his remarkable character.For some reason the book got lost while we moved to the U.S.A., but I never forgot the story.
Not too long ago (I'm 74 years old now) I realized I would never be able to read the book again, because I did not remember the author. "Never mind" said the librarian, "just type in the Dutch title and we might be able to find it". Sure enough, there it was on the computer screen :"Nobody's Boy", by Hector Malot.
The librarian ordered it for me and we (my husband and I) enjoyed it even more than in our youth. Our two sons and their children have also read it and it's on their list of favorite books.
We will now buy it and add this wonderful book to our library at home.

Timeless Reading

I have been looking for this book since grade school, which makes about 30 years! I wasn't sure of the name of the author but took a chance and ordered anyway. I was delighted to find it was the same book I had loved so many years ago. A poignant and touching story about a boy looking for his family, it was a book I couldn't put down. Vivid and stirring, well written, touching ... all describe this wonderful book. I highly recommend it for any age.

Its Funny

I read this book in my second grade class. This is a funny book. Even Steven likes everything even. Odd Todd likes everything odd. For example, Even Steven would like 8 pancakes and Odd Todd would like 7 pancakes. Even Steven goes through hard work with Odd Todd. Then, Even Steven notices that odd and even are both good. My favorite part was when Odd Todd and Even Steven win their $50 prize.

My 4 1/2 year old and I love this book! We're starting pre-K this fall, and I've been looking for math-content books to enrich our daily reading practice. Like another reviewer said, the book isn't overtly focused on math concepts, but I think the idea that everything about Even Steven and Odd Todd is even and odd (respectively, of course) is really clever. My son loves the quirkiness of each character, and I'm thrilled that he's getting some knowledge base of the concepts he'll eventually learn in school.

Incidentally, I purchased this book because it was listed as a resource at the back of "Missing Mittens" by Stuart J. Murphy. If you're looking for books based on mathematical concepts, Murphy's MathStart books are really nicely done. http://www.mathstart.net/

Very clever

My 2 1/2 year old loves this book. I have read it many times. I first heard about it when a mom at a park was reciting it from memory to her 2 year old. It is a very fun book and a great way to introduce the concept of odd and even numbers. Also, the pictures are very fun and my son loves counting all of the fish, cats, gerbils, etc on the pages. So, he is definitely developing his counting too.

Great introduction to philosophy

This book is really amazing as it presents the most important philoshophers throughout history (from ancient times to present day) in a coprehensive way. I especially enjoyed the easy language, the illustrations and of course the content that included the major points each philosopher emphasized on.
As a student, I was actually taught the material and although I had no interest in Philosophy until now, it managed to intrigue my curiocity and I have now picked up several other PH books. It is just for those starting in philosophy however, so if you are looking for in-depth analysis you should be looking somewhere else.

When I first bought the book I was as ususal skeptical about an 'introduction' to philosophy; expecting to get essay length descriptions of ancient philosophies for my money. But I was pleasantly surprised to find the book maintaining a fine balance between including most of the well-known philosophers and philosophical disciplines and expounding on their philosophy.
I think it is a very good starting point for a beginner in philosophy in the sense that once you get an idea of what certain philosophers were all about, you have the option of choosing who appeals to you most.....and then go ahead from there.

A Q&A with Steven Pressfield

Question: What is the distinction between Do the Work and War of Art, the book where you first introduced Resistance? Does Do the Work take it a step further?

Steven Pressfield: Do the Work is structured to take the reader from A to Z. If the reader has a project they want to start or complete, such as a new business they want to open or a book they want to write, Do the Work is designed to take them from starting to shipping to hitting all the predictable resistance points along the way. I know you’re familiar with these moments; The beginning, the middle, and all the moments in between just before you ship and then just after you ship. Do the Work guides you from the start of the project and takes you all the way through.

It’s about getting off your behind and starting something. And Seth Godin writes about this, that once you start, you have to finish; you don’t get off the hook half way through. I recently got an email from a guy who said, "Help. I’m stuck." He was in a class and he had to write a screenplay and he was a quarter of the way through. Normally I would cheer him on, but just for fun, I gave him a little program to do; I put on my instructor voice and said, “Do this, do that, do this, do that.” It worked because right away he got over a couple speed bumps and took it all the way to the finish line. He loved it! I’d always been too shy to do that before, but I tried the assertive tone of voice and it really worked--he responded really well to it. So I thought, let me try that tone of voice in Do the Work.

Question: What did you tell him to do?

Steven Pressfield: One of the first things I told him to do was to banish the self-censor. I could tell he was frozen, worrying, "Is this going to be good? Is this going to be perfect? So I told him, "Take the next five days and write for two hours everyday. I don’t care what else is in your life--banish it. When you write for those two hours, start on minute one and don’t think for one second all the way through until minute 120. Just write, don’t self censor. Don’t do anything." That really seemed to get him moving and gave him permission to not be paralyzed with seeking perfection.

Be Stubborn
Once we commit to action, the worst thing we can do is to stop.

What will keep us from stopping? Plain old stubbornness. I like the idea of stubbornness because it’s less lofty than “tenacity” or “perseverance.” We don’t have to be heroes to be stubborn. We can just be pains in the butt.

When we’re stubborn, there’s no quit in us. We’re mean. We’re mulish. We’re ornery.

We’re in till the finish. We will sink our junkyard-dog teeth into Resistance’s ass and not let go, no matter how hard he kicks.

Start at the End
Here’s a trick that screenwriters use: work backwards. Begin at the finish.

If you’re writing a movie, solve the climax first. If you’re opening a restaurant, begin with the experience you want the diner to have when she walks in and enjoys a meal. If you’re preparing a seduction, determine the state of mind you want the process of romancing to bring your lover to.

Figure our where you want to go; then work backwards from there.

Yes, you say. “But how do I know where I want to go?”

I am ready to survive the belly of the beast!

I don't write a lot of reviews on here - but for this book - I had to take the time to write one.

This book had a profound impact on the me. I feel like my past failures were explained. I feel like my past successes were explained. I feel like, for the first time, I truly understand why I quit nearly everything I start and why I can feel invincible in my endeavors one day and completely defeated the next - and I feel equipped to do it differently now.

It is going to sound fake but it isn't -
since reading this book:
I have stuck to my diet
I have taken on some major clients/projects at work
I have watched a LOT less TV and have determined to do what it takes to get my work done for the day
I have been able to defeat the dragon more consistently than ever before.

I am SO glad I read this book. SO glad. This book ranks up with a handful of books that I have read in my life as LIFECHANGERS. This one has been a catalyst for me. You may not have the same experience - but I honestly want to tell everyone I know - Read this book. And then read it again. I am going to have my 17yo read this book over the summer even thought it has some profanity which I am not thrilled with. If it didn't have it - I would have my 11 year old read it as well. Instead, I will just teach him the concepts within the book. They are going to help me in my business this summer and I want them to learn these principles and to master the ability to DO THE WORK.

If you're looking for a dull, uninspiring, trite book, you've come to the right tome.

I sincerely wish whoever wrote the copy for the book had also written the book. I ordered all four of his books because they sounded amazing. I am an avid reader and aside from having to read Faulkner in the 8th grade, I've never met a book I don't like. Until now. Trite doesn't even begin to explain it. Unfortunately I spent the last six weeks fighting two consecutive pneumonia-type viruses and apparently missed my opportunity to return these wastes of a good tree. Seriously, don't waste your time or money. Watching a spot on a wall is more interesting. I didn't finish any of the books (which also are tiny tomes of the depth one would expect of a My First Reader), that's how uninspiring I found them. Very sad.

No, resistance is not intelligent and malevolent and out to kill me

I'm not quite sure what I just read, but it definitely didn't resonate with me.

I really don't believe that resistance is intelligent and malevolent and out to kill me. I think it is obvious a book needs a beginning, a middle and an end. I am left wondering where the practical advice is besides be stubborn and just get it done.

There are a few nuggets of wisdom in here for sure, but they are scattered around and steeped in new age mysticism and antagonistic views of the self and universe.

For me, I see resistance as a gentle message from my self that maybe I should stop and see if what I am doing is dangerous or something I should be afraid of. It is part of human nature and comes from within. It is part of our fear based fight or flight response and is a useful tool meant to serve us. We can be its master if only we learn to be OK with and accept these feelings. No, you can't make these feelings go away, but you can certainly change your reaction to them. When resistance or fear arises I "note" it (ah, there's some fear or resistance), I lean into it (never run away from it or it will just get stronger) and I try to see the message behind it. I then ask (Is this useful?) Is there a real danger to me? If not, then I say, thank you and move on and do what needs to be done. If there is danger, then I am grateful for the message and heed it's warning.

One great point in the book which has been said many times is that action is the antidote to fear. I agree that just getting started and building momentum is important, but this book could have been the 3 words of the Nike slogan, "Just Do It".

Your mileage may vary but I think there are other ways to have a more kind and gentle relationship with this "beast" that is inside all of us. Kudos to the author for tackling such a difficult subject though.
